In 2005, the Safe, Accountable, Flexible, and Efficient
Transportation Equity: A Legacy for User (SAFETEA) act provided
transportation funding to communities all across the country.
Through the efforts of Senator Leahy, the City of Burlington
received $3 million for specific improvements on the Church Street
Marketplace as part of the Church Street Marketplace Improvement
Program and $3 million for improvements on the side streets adjacent
to the Church Street Marketplace. These improvements will be guided
by the following principles:
- Burlington’s Church Street Marketplace, Waterfront and
Downtown will be economically strengthened through continued
public improvements and private investments;
- The infrastructure improvements provided on the Waterfront
will ensure safer pedestrian and vehicular access;
- The amenities of the Church Street Marketplace will be
extended to other parts of the downtown and the waterfront;
- Consideration will be given to improvements that can be well
maintained and managed; and
- The infrastructure improvements will use environmental best
practices and strive for sustainability.
The development of specific improvement projects will follow a
public process approved by VTrans and City. The current
projects include:
