CEDO AmeriCorps*VISTA Positions for 2008-2009

Burlington’s Community and Economic Development Office (CEDO), the administrator of Vermont’s largest AmeriCorps*VISTA program, seeks to fill up to 20 positions in Burlington and statewide as part of its nationally recognized national service program. AmeriCorps*VISTA Members spend one to three years living in communities they serve, working to increase the capacity of citizens to improve their lives through a broad range of community efforts including: literacy, housing, health education, and refugee assistance. AmeriCorps*VISTAs serve as change agents for a better world.

“One cannot speak of community and neighborhood development in Burlington and around the state without acknowledging the incredible efforts of the City’s AmeriCorps*VISTA members,” says Burlington Mayor Bob Kiss.

CEDO’s AmeriCorps*VISTA program has been working in the Burlington area since 1993. It was the first VISTA program for the state of Vermont and has served as a national model across the country. The impact is significant; over the past three years CEDO-VISTA members have:

  • Recruited 8,476 new volunteers to their programs who in turn performed 126,144 hours of service
  • Raised $2,736,415 value of in-kind goods, donations, and volunteer hours
  • Garnered $902,897 in grants and cash donations to support the work of their agencies

In addition to serving with the program, members benefit from an extensive personal and professional development training program and an opportunity to work on an array of service projects including the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service and Green-Up Day. Many members secure permanent work in fields of interest as a result of their VISTA term. The program currently has positions open in a variety of areas including Literacy Programs, Anti-Hunger, Refugee/Immigrant Services, Children/Youth issues, Social Equity, and Public Health.

A*VISTA Members receive a monthly living stipend, health insurance, childcare benefits, and an educational award of $4,725 or an end of service stipend of $1,200. Interested applicants should phone the CEDO AmeriCorps*VISTA office at 865.7169 or 865.7170 for additional information.

Application deadline is June 9, 2008. Hiring deadline is June 23, 2008. All applicants must be hired by this date. The start date is August 12, 2008.
