BE3 Project (CEDO)
Description: Burlington’s Community and Economic Development Office, Economic Development Division, intends to lead a two-year project focused on helping restaurant and convenience store owners to save money while benefiting the environment at the same time.

CEDO recognizes the important contribution of your business to the City’s vibrant economy and is ready to work with you and the other BE3 partners to help you save money and achieve the overall project goals. Assessment teams for energy, solid waste, supply chain alternatives, and employee transportation can be scheduled to visit your business, free of charge, to analyze your current situation and possibly suggest strategies for improving your bottom line and the environment of the City.

This strategy incorporates a multi-pronged approach combining energy conservation, solid waste stream reductions, water & wastewater conservation, alternative supply chain recommendations, routing of organic waste to composting, outreach on Renewal Community tax incentives, and more.

Project Benefits:

  • Positive financial implications for business owners
  • Significant reductions in electricity and gas use
  • Reductions in the solid waste stream
  • Significant input into the Intervale Composting Project
  • An increase in sales of more environmentally friendly projects
  • Reductions in greenhouse gases and air pollution
  • Reductions in water use
  • Development of sustainable business practices

Vermont Business Environmental Partnership (VBEP)
Description: The Vermont Business Environmental Partnership (VBEP) program was created in 1998 to promote and advance environmentally – and fiscally – sound practices in small businesses throughout the state (www.vbep.org). This program is a voluntary environmental assistance and recognition program offered by the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation and the Vermont Small Business Development Center.

The VBEP program recognizes Vermont businesses which are committed to pollution prevention and exemplary environmental stewardship. The process begins with an environmental opportunity assessment conducted by the VBEP program staff, in which good practices are observed and recommendations can be made to further reduce the environmental impact of the inn and the guests. A business must adopt 8 core standards in order to be designated an Environmental Partner. These standards include management policies, such as:

  • designating an environmental team
  • developing a mission statement
  • developing an environmentally preferable purchasing policy and initiatives, such as:
    • solid/hazardous waste and toxic use reduction
    • energy efficiency
    • recycling and composting
    • wastewater discharge reduction

Becoming a member of the VBEP is an excellent way to communicate to the public and customers that your organization shares this environmental ethic and backs it up in action and deed.
