Description: Burlington Technical Center - Adult Education Program
Adult Technical Education is an opportunity for adult students to acquire hands-on, practical training for employment in a variety of job fields.  13 daytime job training programs are offered in the areas of trades and industry food service, business/office and technical related fields.  Courses meet for 2 1/4 hours each day for two complete school years.  Many students complete their training requirements in a shorter period.

Description: Burlington High School - Continuing Program
Continuing Education provides the opportunity for adults to continue the education process, either for job skill attainment, high school diploma requirements or recreational purposes.  Adults may acquire credits to apply toward a high school diploma or enroll in vocational-related programs to develop entry-level job skills.
Schedule: Evening courses start fall semester beginning September
Evening courses start spring semester beginning February
GED testing program, test administered twice each month

CVOEO Micro Business Development Program

Description: The Micro Business Development Program is operated statewide through the Vermont Community Action Agencies to promote self-employment among low to moderate income Vermonters.  MBDP offers one-on-one counseling, classroom training/workshops, mentoring and peer networking groups to people who are exploring the idea of starting a business or those who want to expand an existing business.  MDBP Business Development Specialists also help clients write business plans and get financing through a variety of lending sources.
Cost: All services are free of charge to income-eligible individuals.
CyberSkills/Vermont

Description: The mission of Linking Learning to Life is to improve the educational performance, advancement, and the employment and career prospects for all Burlington students.  Partnerships are formed with businesses, colleges, community organizations, and human service agencies to offer career development, applied learning, and community-based learning opportunities for students.  Project activities include:
  • Operating the Career Directions Center at Burlington High School as a career exploration and planning resource for students, teachers and community. The Center contains books, videos, seven computer stations with three on the Internet, etc. Staff work with clients one-on-one to conduct career research, write resumes, job search, etc.
  • Placing teachers in summer business internships to adapt curriculum and instruction.
  • Creating opportunities for high school students to experience college and connect it to career options through "college Connections."
  • Helping students develop career path options through quality work site learning experiences and hands-on applications in the classroom.

Northern New England Tradeswomen (NNETW)

Description: Northern New England Tradeswomen, a Vermont non-profit, helps women and ethnic minorities enter, advance and remain in the skilled trades and other non-traditional employment NNETW, operating state wide, offers three programs:
  • STEP-UP for Women is a 13-week employment training program for women who are interested in exploring careers in the skilled trades, i.e., carpentry, electric wiring, plumbing, etc. STEP-UP for Women prepares women for high-skill, high-wage jobs in the skilled trades.
  • WomenBuild is a three-month on-the-job training and work experience program in housing construction and rehabilitation. Participants of WomenBuild have some trades experience but are not yet prepared to transition into full-time employment in the skilled trades.
  • Employment Diversity in Highway Construction is committed to increasing opportunities for women and ethnic minorities who seek to enter the field of highway construction. EDHC works to place women and minorities in on-the-job training positions and full-time positions in highway construction.
Cost: If eligible, sponsorship is available through the Department of Employment & Training or the Department of Social Welfare for STEP-UP and WomenBuild.  Services provided by Employment Diversity in Highway Construction are free of charge.  Call for details.
ReCycle North/Job Skill Training

Description: ReCycle North offers employment and job skills training to homeless individuals and others in transition.  Eligible trainees earn a living wage, build transferable job skills, develop confidence and self-respect, and gain solid work credentials.  Four 6-month, non-accredited programs are offered:
  • Appliance Repair Trianing: Hands-on experience repairing large appliances in customer's homes. Opportunity to be EPA Class I certified to handle refrigerants.
  • Business & Office Administration Training: Trainees help ReCycle North address its administrative needs at its Pine Street sales and service operation. Hands-on computer experience using Microsoft Office computer software.
  • Customer Service/Retail Management Training: Hands-on experience running ReCycle North's busy retail store offering appliances, electronics household goods and furniture. Trainees learn Customer Relations, Cash Register Management skills, Supervision, Telephone/Retail Management skills, and Organization skills.
  • Electronics Training: Trainees learn necessary skills to land a job in electro-mechanical manufacturing and production. Program covers electronics theory and principles, soldering skills, testing equipment, reading schematics and color codes.

Vermont Adult Learning/Community College of Vermont
Building Bridges Class

Description: Building Bridges is a pre-college class for non-native and native speakers.  Focus is on building basic skills:  critical reading (vocabulary), writing and computer literacy.  "Getting to know your community" is also addressed in covering topics such as housing, health care, credit, police, school financing, career choice, etc.
Cost: FREE with VSAC non-degree grant or Vermont Immigrant Scholarship.
Vermont Associates for Training & Development

Description: Provides employment assistance and training programs to income-eligible Vermonters aged 55 and older who wish to enter or reenter the job market.  Training is available in a number of different skill areas, although many participants enroll in high tech computer training courses.  Internships leading to permanent employment are also available.  No-cost services include:
  • Recruitment/placement services
  • Skills assessment
  • Career planning
  • Peer counseling
  • Paid training & Paid work experience training
  • Customized classroom training

Vermont Association of Business Industry & Rehabilitation (VABIR)

Description: Not-for-profit agency that assists employers by referring qualified, pre-screened applicants with disabilities for open positions, and by providing education and awareness of issues involved in working with the disabled.  A sampling of the services offered are:
  • Help employers retain employees who become disabled.
  • Collaborate with community resources to assist businesses.
  • Conduct training on the Americans with Disabilities Act and disability awareness topics
  • Provide private rehabilitation services for employees
  • Arrange for free accessibility surveys

Vermont Department of Labor (VDOL)

Description: The Community Resource Center assists individuals in their job search, with computer word processing, typewriters, desks, phones, fax machines, photocopier, stationery and other supplies.  Maintains large database of current open positions.  Offers programs to assist job seekers and employers.
  • On-the-Job Training, a business partnership with VDOL to reimburse up to 50% of employee's wages for training while on the job.
  • VDOL website.
  • Compass, a workshop for individuals to clarify vocational goals.
  • Employment Search Assistance, a workshop on learning how to job search, write resumes, interview, etc.
  • Job Networking Group, a weekly forum to provide peer support facilitated by VDOL staff.
  • Recruitment through a statewide computerized job listing, screening and referral, National Job Bank.
  • The agency will also help workers obtain bonding, answer questions regarding unemployment insurance and provide information on Vermont's labor force and employment.

Vermont Division of Vocational Rehabilitation

Description: Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR) assists people with disabilities to prepare themselves for work and to find a job.  A DVR counselor will be assigned to individuals to determine eligibility for services and help prepare the client for employment.

Vermont Immigrant Assistance Scholarship

Description: Thanks to a generous from the Freeman Foundation, the Vermont State Colleges has established this program to assist those U.S. refugees and immigrants who have limited financial resources and a functional use of reading, writing and speaking English.  This program will provide the opportunity for qualified student to attend one of five Vermont State Colleges.  Scholarships are available to "permanent residents,;" the length of their residency in Vermont does not matter.  Applicants cannot be in the U.S. on tourist or student visas.

Vermont Refugee Resettlement Program

Assistance for refugees and recent immigrants:

YouthBuild Burlington

Schedule: Programs are 9 months in length.  Students spend alternating weeks in class and on the construction site Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 3:30 pm.  Call for details.

Description: YouthBuild Burlington is a full-time program for participants age 16 to 24 to learn construction and other job skills, study toward a GED or further education, and earn money.  Participants develop communication and leadership skills, and prepare for employment or higher education.
