Business Refugee Resource Guide - Food Stamps & Food Shelves/Meals

Description: Community Action provides a variety of food services to low-income people. From May to October, Farm-to-Family coupons are distributed to be used to buy fresh fruits and vegetables at local farmers markets. These coupons are available to eligible families and can be used at the Old North End Farmer's Market in the Triangle at HO Wheeler School. They can also be used to help with the application for food stamps.

Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf
Location: 228 N. Winooski Ave., Burlington 05401
Schedule: Meals: Mon. to Fri. 9:00am to 4:00pm. Sundays 7:00am to 10:30am.
Take home groceries: Mon. to Fri. 9:00am to 4:00pm.
Description: The Food Shelf serves breakfast and lunch 6 days a week for the homeless and for those who lack cooking facilities or are low on food. Also available, a three-day supply of groceries once per month for individuals and families who are without food.

Food Stamps Program,  Department of Social Welfare (DSW) 
Location: 1193 North Ave., Burlington   05401
Schedule: Walk-ins and by appointment.

Description: In Vermont, Food Stamps for clients are obtained at DSW. Potential clients must be interviewed for gross income and possession of resources.  The Food Stamp case worker must send the client notification of eligibility no later than 30 days after the date of application.  DSW, Chittenden Community Action and area Senior Centers can help clients with applying for Food Stamps.  If the application process takes more than 30 days, the client should contact Community Action at 863-6248 or VT Legal Aid at 863-5620.

Expedited Food Stamps are available for the homeless or very low income/resource clients.  If eligible, Food Stamps are issued the first working day after application.  An interview is required, call for details.

Jericho-Underhill Ecumenical Ministries Food Shelf
Location: Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Route 15, Jericho   05465
Schedule:  3rd Saturday of each month, 9:30-11:30am.

Description: Groceries are available for people living in Jericho, Underhill, W. Bolton, and Essex Center.  No appointment is necessary.  No meals served.  Children's clothing is also available at Food Shelf pickup times.

Joint Urban Ministries Project (JUMP)
Location:  First Congregational Church, 38 S. Winooski Ave., Burlington   05401
Schedule:  Monday through Friday, 9:15am to Noon.

Description: JUMP provides vouchers for people in need of canned food, baby food, personal items, gas, electricity, and diapers. Call for more information.

Milton Food Shelf at St. Ann's

Old North End Community Dinner
Location: McClure Multi-Generational Ctr, 249 N. Winooski Ave., Burlington   05401
Schedule: The second Thursday of every month from 5:30 to 6:30pm.

Description: A festive monthly community dinner for residents of the Old North End is held at the McClure Multi-Generational Center.  All food is donated, often from local farms and restaurants.  Please call if you wish to attend, donate or volunteer.

Richmond Food Shelf

Description: People can receive a three-day supply of groceries once per month.  After three months, clients are requested to go to the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf in Burlington.

Summer Food Service Program, Burlington School Food Service

Description: The City of Burlington offers free meals in the summer to children up to age 18 at various sites. Often games or activities are included at the site. This program is jointly sponsored by the Department of Education and Child Nutrition Programs.

Women, Infants & Children (WIC), Vermont Department of Health
Location: 108 Cherry St., P.O. Box 70, Burlington   05402

Description: A supplemental food program for women who are pregnant, new mothers, or breast-feeding.  Participants attend clinics twice yearly (interpreter services are available).  At WIC clinics, participants receive health and nutrition education and information about community resources.  WIC provides home delivery of certain foods such as milk, cereal, cheese, juice, eggs and baby formula.  Clients must fit the same income eligibility as for Medicaid.  Call for more information.
