Crisis Fuel Assistance, Community Action Program & Department of Social Welfare (DSW)

Description: Crisis Fuel Assistance helps persons in emergency situations who are in danger of having their utilities shut off or their fuel supply run out during the winter.

General Assistance for Housing, Department of Social Welfare (DSW)

Description: Eligible clients who qualify for General Assistance can receive $232.00 per month for housing.

Supplemental Fuel Assistance, Department of Social Welfare (DSW)

Description: Supplemental Fuel is available to households who are income eligible.  Clients receive a check to pay for energy bills.  Clients can be employed and do not have to receive other public assistance to be eligible. Money is available November through March.  If clients get TANF or Food Stamps, they may apply at any time by filling out a Fuel Assistance Application and must have an interview at the Department of Social Welfare.  Persons who do not receive other benefits can submit applications from July through February 28.  For persons over 60 or disabled, checks can be obtained in October and interviewed at home. DSW must notify clients of eligibility within 30 days.  The money received may vary due to income, housing costs, type of fuel used, and type of housing (apartment, mobile home or house).

Temporary Housing/Emergency Assistance, Department of Social Welfare (DSW)

Chittenden Community Action   863-6248
Description: Provides up to 28 days of temporary emergency housing in a local hotel/motel for clients who have lost permanent housing through no fault of their own (legal eviction, condemnation, fire etc.).  Also available, monetary assistance for a Security Deposit, first month's rent and utilities, including deposits and connection charges, once a new apartment is found.  This is only provided once in a twelve month period.  Families with children need a security deposit.
