Description: CEDO provides housing rehabilitation assistance to low-income homeowners in low-income neighborhoods.  CEDO offers low-interest loans for emergency repairs, down payment assistance, and rehabilitation of properties. CEDO also offers grants for both accessibility modifications and exterior paint for qualified households.

CVOEO Fair Housing Project

Description: The Vermont Fair Housing Project is a statewide program of the Champlain Valley Office of Economic Opportunity (CVOEO), a nonprofit community action agency.  FHP can assist victims of discrimination in the filing of housing discrimination complaints with the Vermont Human Rights Commission or the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.  FHP can also help in securing private legal representation, or with housing discrimination laws or issues.  In Vermont, it is illegal to discriminate or harass in the sale or rental of housing because of a person's race, sex, sexual orientation, age, marital status, religion, color, national origin, disability, family status, or receipt of public assistance.  Housing discrimination may be subtle or not so subtle and may include statements like, "You have too many kids for this apartment," or "We only rent to professionals, not families with kids or people on welfare," or actions like placing people all in one section of the housing because of their race or national origin.

Vermont Refugee Resettlement Program

Description: Locates apartments for newly arrived refugees.  Works closely with a number of landlords for housing placement.  Provides referrals for walk-ins.

Vermont Tenants, Inc.

Description: A Champlain Valley Office of Economic Opportunity (CVOEO) program that provides direct services to mostly low-income tenants.  VTI works on policy issues to benefit these tenants and provides public education and workshops on tenants' rights.  It publishes the free guide book "Renting in Vermont: Information Handbook for Tenants and Landlords".
