Description: The Vermont Fair Housing Project is a statewide program of the Champlain Valley Office of Economic Opportunity (CVOEO), a nonprofit community action agency.  VFHP can assist victims of discrimination in the filing of housing discrimination complaints with the Vermont Human Rights Commission or the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban development.  FHP also helps in securing private legal representation, or with housing discrimination laws or issues.  In Vermont, it is illegal to discriminate or harass in the sale or rental of housing because of a person's race, sex, sexual orientation, age, marital status, religion, color, national origin, disability, family status, or receipt of public assistance.  Housing discrimination may be subtle or not so subtle and may include statements like, "You have too many kids for this apartment," or "We only rent to professionals, not families with kids or people on welfare," or actions placing people all in one section of the housing because of their race or national origin.
