Goal: All residents enjoy livable, attractive neighborhoods, with
safe, accessible and tree-lined streets and sidewalks; community greenspace and
diverse public open spaces; quality parks and recreational areas, and a wide
range of recreational opportunities; and with bicycle and pedestrian connections
among neighborhoods and to the City center.
Five-Year Focus:
- Support the Department of Public Works' capital improvements of streets
and sidewalks.
- Support the Department of Parks & Recreation's master urban
reforestation plan.
- Support the Department of Parks & Recreation's Capital Improvement
Plan.
- Support the Department of Parks & Recreation's recreational
programming for Burlington residents, especially for low-income youth.
- Encourage the adoption of an open space protection plan and the
establishment of an open land trust fund.
- Support traffic calming in residential neighborhoods.
- Support improved pedestrian and bicycle connections among neighborhoods
and to the City center.
- Encourage undergrounding of utility lines.
- Encourage the expanded use of schools as community centers.
- Build a new Recreational Center(s) providing year-round facility
space.
- Increase the number of places where families without backyards can play
with young children.
- Enhance City Hall Park as a child/family-friendly place.
- Increase the availability of Community Gardens, perhaps with
greenhouses.
- Continue to work with the Neighborhood Planning Assemblies (NPAs) to
identify local needs (including street improvements, greenbelt improvements,
neighborhood clean-ups, traffic calming, accessible sidewalks and recreational facilities) and to
develop strategies responsive to those needs.
