Goal: The City's environmental assets are preserved, protected and
enhanced for the health and enjoyment of residents and visitors.
Five-Year Focus
- Support the establishment of a system for ongoing monitoring of water and
air quality.
- Administer and partner in the Burlington Eco-Information (EMPACT)
project.
- Support the implementation of the Climate Protection Plan.
- Minimize use of pollutants within the City.
- Explore the use of financial incentives for businesses to reduce air
and water pollution.
- Encourage the implementation of broad-based environmental education
programs.
- Encourage residents to use fewer fertilizers, convert lawns to other
green uses and use detergents with less phosphorous.
- Encourage an annual Earth Day education program that includes beach and
neighborhood cleanups.
- Encourage the development and implementation of an urban reforestation
plan.
- Upgrade waste water and storm water systems.
- Install state-of-the-art catch basins that minimize pollution run-off
into the lake
- Reduce reliance on single-occupancy vehicles.
- Promote nonpolluting technologies for transportation.
- Support the development of sustainable, renewable energy sources.
- Support effective energy conservation measures.
- Encourage the installation of low-impact lighting throughout the
City.
- Support the strengthening of building codes to make them more
environmentally sound.
- Continue the Brownfields Pilot Program.
- Build the Intervale Community Food Enterprise Facility.
- Expand the Sustainability Curriculum.
