Goal: The City is a place of equality where there is equal access to
community resources for all people.
Five-Year Focus:
- Support English language and literacy education for refugees and
immigrants outside the public school system and increase access to all
services for refugees and immigrants.
- Support diversity management to support the integration of new students
from diverse cultural backgrounds into the schools.
- Increase efforts to make the schools feel welcoming and safe for all
students and their parents.
- Support the development of programs to eliminate discriminatory behavior
in schools, and the creation of a regular "report card" on efforts
to promote diversity on school staffs.
- Support access to language interpreters and translated and culturally
nd aware materials.
- Provide information about basic city services in the major languages other
than English spoken in the City.
- Promote equal access to hous
- Promote equal access to housing, jobs, and services for people of color,
refugees, immigrants, people with disabilities, gays and lesbians and
women.
- Provide technical and financial assistance to eliminate barriers to
accessibility at all public spaces, city buildings and community
centers.
- Support access to resources necessary to provide interpretation services
and other access services for people with disabilities as required by the
Americans With Disabilities Act.
- Support community initiatives addressing human and civil rights and social
justice issues
arising from prevailing social conditions within the City of
Burlington.
- Support the Study Circles and other initiatives of the Burlington
Anti-Racism Coalition.
- Support and expand programs that nurture community leadership and civic
engagement from within
the low-income community.
- Increase diversity - including youth and
minorities - on decision-making boards of all types.
