Burlington's Demographic Data: The Fall and Rise of Burlington's Families

The data presented here comes from the U.S. Census unless otherwise noted. For purposes of comparison, there are some limitations to using this data. The decennial censuses from 1960 to 2000 did not always collect the same data, nor did they always report data for the same geographic units. For example, looking at long-term trends at the neighborhood level in Burlington is difficult because information at the census tract level is not available prior to 1980. Also, the census tract boundaries in Burlington changed in 2000. That makes it necessary to look at a map of the 2000 areas for some purposes and at a map of the older boundaries for other purposes.

Burlington Quick Facts

  • Population: 39,815
  • # of children (under 18): 6,331
  • # of families: 7,055
  • # of seniors (60 and older): 5,150
  • # of residents enrolled in college/grad school: 10,163
  • Foreign-born residents: 8.1%
  • Residents identifying their racial/ethnic background as other than white, not Hispanic: 9.1%

Summary Demographic Findings

  • Many of the biggest shifts in Burlington demographics occurred between 1970 and 1980, with declines in rates of homeownership and children coinciding with increases in numbers of college students and single-person households.
  • Previous citywide downward trends in homeownership and in proportion of children under 18 stabilized and increased in the last decade.
  • Burlington trends largely mirror county trends, but with different starting points.
  • Trends in homeownership and in numbers of children vary greatly in Burlington from neighborhood to neighborhood - going up in some places and down in others.
  • Burlington is demographically different from other Chittenden County towns - and is similar to many other small New England cities.
  • Burlington has more children and more homeowners than any other Chittenden County town - but is more diverse because it also has more single-person and other non-family households (including students)
  • Burlington homeowners are aging in place - 47% have been in the same house for 20 or more years, and over 40% are age 55 and older.
  • Two-thirds of Burlington under age 6 have all of their parents in the workforce.
