Impact of Social Housing

The period from 1970 to 1990 was the period in which social housing (i.e., rental housing which is made affordable because of public subsidies provided by a federal, state or municipal agency) came into existence. As has been documented in a number of other reports, Burlington is home to most of the county's social housing. The numbers in the chart on the left below come from The History of Sprawl in Chittenden County, Champlain Initiative Burlington, 1999, and show the numbers of Publicly Assisted Affordable Housing as of March 1998. Excluding social housing units, the City's homeownership rate has been stable over the last 40 years.
