The Student Impact

In comparing Burlington to other Chittenden County towns and to other New England cities, one of the first distinctions that appears - and one that tends to skew some of the other data - is the high percentage of college/grad students. Over a quarter of the City's residents are enrolled in college and graduate school. Of the 10,163 college/grad students living in Burlington, around 60% (6,103) do not live in dorms. Those off-campus students get counted, for example, when the Census Bureau computes the individual poverty rate for the City - giving a different picture of those living in poverty than places with fewer students.
