Many of the biggest shifts in the composition of Burlington's population
occurred between 1970 and 1980. Drops in the proportions of family households
coincided with increases in the proportions of college students and
single-person households. (In talking about family households, there has always
been a significant distinction between the total number of families and those
families that have children.)
Demographics over this forty-year time period (nationally and locally) have
been significantly affected by shrinking family size and by the "baby
boomer" effect.
