WHAT COULD BE ADDED:

1. Hold cross-departmental meetings (with representatives from Parks & Recreation, City Arts, the Library, Market Place, CEDO, Schools and the Police Department) to guide family initiatives in the City.

  • Hire an AmeriCorps*VISTA to staff the meetings and to help implement initiatives.

2. Work with City Departments to assure that children/family-based activities are included at all City events and functions.

3. Develop an outreach plan and materials for communicating Burlington's family assets to the general public, with a multicultural approach to the plan and the materials.

4. Add a discussion about impacts on Children and Youth to each Section of the City's Municipal Development Plan.

5. Have each City Department review policies to insure that they encourage and not discourage conditions for all families and children.

6. Serve as a model employer for parents with children: review policies regarding parental leave, flexible hours, childcare assistance, etc.

7. Explore incorporating a "Neighborhood Ambassador" program into educational and recreational programming, where children are encouraged to visit other neighborhoods and talk about their own, building pride in their own neighborhoods while increasing their sense of belonging and comfort in the City as a whole.

8. Consider expanding the centralized mailings on recreational/cultural activities into a City newspaper, addressing additional issues such as quality of life.
