Your Ideas and Comments: July 5, 2005

Thank you to all who have submitted ideas for the future of Moran!!

-Community center that would tie into the Burlington Bike Path—for example bike, rollerblade rentals for visitors to the area.

Moran Plant should be torn down. Put a nice public park for everyone.

Make a new agreement with the Y.

-Science, national history or historical museum. -Hotel with top floor restaurant and shops at ground level. -Top Floor observatory or observation deck. -Community center with classes and open tennis courts, pool, basketball courts, etc., with sailing center, bike rentals, etc.

Tear down the outdated, obstructive, outdated old wreck. Create open space and wait for the right use for all of Burlington citizens. Thank you.

I’m a user and member of the Sailing Center (for kayak storage and dock access). I am very much in favor of developing the Moran Plant as a home base for community use of waterfront for sailing and paddle sports. In particular, encouraging the growth of skills and knowledge of human-powered watercraft among a wide range of Burlington residents, especially at lower income levels, would be a great thing. IMO [In my opinion], it would be a shame if the Moran property reverted to open land, with no facilities to support boating. As a kayaker, I’m used to adapting to most kinds of shoreline, but facilitated access is needed for people with a wide range of abilities. Chris.

It seems that the Maritime Museum would be a natural fit here. I admit my foremost concern is the preservation of the Sailing Center. Affordable, simple access to sailing for the boating public, especially for those of us of moderate means, is a must. Let’s see if we can get this building to work, rather than starting over.

Rip it down.

I think the Moran Plant should be torn down and any on-site pollution should be cleaned up. I think after this is done a small building should be built to house the Lake Champlain Community Sailing Center to suit their needs. The surrounding area should be made into a park space with trees, grass and a picnic area.

Take the Plant Down. Green Space.

Interim Idea: It could make a great movie set for a feature film—send photos to Vermont Film Commission and ask to be a “featured location” on their website and location database. Good way to generate cash . . . good economic development (jobs!).

Tear the Moran Plant down. Lease space to the Sailing Center. Build a beautiful low-key park.

Our first responsibility is to take down the Moran Plant and clean up all the toxic waste and any other waste that’s harmful to the environment. After the clean up we should have a green area with picnic tables, horseshoes, volleyball nets and barbecue grills where people and families can enjoy Vermont’s beauty.
