Your Ideas and Comments: June 2, 2005

Thank you to all who have submitted ideas for the future of Moran!!

My husband and I have believed for some time that the city should spend the money to Tear Down the Moran Plant and Build a Park. Over the past 30 years it has become progressively more of an eyesore, an attractive nuisance and a potential danger. Burlington's waterfront is one of our most valuable resources and should provide as many recreational opportunities for our citizens as possible. The Moran Plant has not been maintained and is ill-suited for any purpose other than that which it originally served. We would vote "yes" on a bond issue to fund the demolition and park development project.

Tear it down! Restore area to grass. Build new building for sailing center. No uses that need a lot of parking. Do not give land away for free. Require public approval for any waterfront development. Leave waterfront open and grassed otherwise. Stop trying to shove things down to the voters!

A. world class planetarium. B. Burlington College campus building (room to grow). C. Fleming Museum-Modern Art wind (large sculpture installations). D. UVM Perkins Geology Museum, (brontosaurus skeleton!) E. Municipal Recreation Center. David Barber

I think the building should be demolished, property landscaped and left open to the public for sporting, picnics, etc. of course parking (free)!

Knock it down, sell the property back to Burlington Electric for cost of removal, the BED can erect a wind and solar facility. In other words, put the location back into power generation.

An alternative energy generating plant (solar, wind, etc.) managed by Burlington Electric. Includes a museum about alternative energies that serves as a clearing house for information on all forms of renewable energy; hands-on exhibits and energy efficient facilities (much like NRG Systems in Hinesburg). Let’s create clean, renewable energy right here on the Burlington waterfront fro everyone to see and learn about. A. Urbschat

Tear the plant down and turn property into a park.

Moran Plant. Tear it down. It’s an eyesore. Replace it with a beautiful park with a modern, see-through shell where people can enjoy outdoor concerts and sunsets. If need be, have a one-time elimination fee to get rid of the old structure blocking the view.

1. Have a municipal auditorium for all the arts 2. Large indoor swimming pool with swimming lessons. 3. In the summer especially, have arts and crafts classes. 4. Have computer classes and facilities for Senior Citizens to enjoy. Arline Peterson

1. Tear it down! 2. Plant grass and add picnic tables. 3. Hold for next generation to develop.

Tear down that ugly building and make a beautiful park for the people to enjoy.

My idea about the Moran Plant. I think the best way to deal with this place is just to tear down the building. It’s an eyesore! Also, given the ground it’s built on—the place is unstable. So tear it down and start over. J.W.

A community center “like YMCA” but city operated similar to operation of Leddy Park Skating Rink but with a swimming pool and a center for Burlington City recreational activities of all kinds that happen on the waterfront. Manage all the Waterfront activities—ice fishing, polar bear . . . chew-chew, fireworks, etc. all recreational activity occurring on the waterfront.

Tear it down. Make a public park. No parking lot

1. Remove old Moran plant. 2. Restore with public open space. 3. Open space for bandshell, picnic area--some covered.

1. Tear it down-restore the area to green space. 2. Tear it down-construct an area or center for sailing in the summer and cross country skiing in the winter.

Tear the thing down. Install picnic table—do not build anything that would be blocking the view. This should not be a park for games. It should be a park to allow people to enjoy the beauty and not be bothered by ball games, etc. Lots of benches, a food stand (away from the lake). E. J. McGarghan

Tear it down. The sooner the better!

1. Sailing center expanded. 2. Boat storage basement (get rid of water for money). 3. Repair small boat and sails. 4. Viewing deck and room inside to sit out of weather. 5. Year round restaurant top floor with windows. 6. Lake Champlain Maritime Museum 7. Boat building. 6. Offices for groups using building. 7. Public space to relax and bathrooms—open year round. 8. Ice boating rentals and lessons. 9. Ice fishing and ice skating. Put all together—all lake oriented for public. Carolyn C. Bates.
