Your Ideas and Comments: July 15, 2005 - Part II

Thank you to all who have submitted ideas for the future of Moran!!

Keep this waterfront for public use! Visit Chicago and tour the lakefront for incredible vision in waterfront preservation/public use. There are few cities in the world with this opportunity! I voted for the Y—what about bringing in the YWCA too? (they operate a bit differently) The children of B’ton need more indoor, public gathering places. This is incredibly important given our climate.

Mixed use: Maintain Sailing Center in lower west side on east side of lower story, bike and roller blade rental center for use on the bike trail. Public restrooms. Patio dining/coffee bar/smoothie bar in middle section. Observation deck on upper stories day/night sky viewing. Fine dining/sky top dining on top story (increase windows). Children’s museum similar to Boston’s w/Omni theater or constellation theatre.

Leave it the way it is.

Year-round farmer’s market with café and outdoor skating place similar to Manywunk, PA. Need to have some year round draw to bring people to the waterfront in the winter. Could have the skating be “zambonied” with some kind of shelter over top and overlook.

We feel that you (we) should tear down the Moran Plant and replace it with a big, beautiful Waterfront Park. We feel it is important to minimize automobile traffic on and near the waterfront. The park would have some parking but would encourage other modes of transportation.

Stop trying to come up with an idea everyone will agree on—it’s never going to happen. The best thing that can be done is for the City to sell the property to the highest bidder (with some restrictions for public space, etc.). The City could realize a huge financial upside (and zero downside) and then a professional developer could develop the property into a mix of whatever they see fit (likely mix of residential, commercial, retail). Let the free market decide what happens; a round table discussion will provide good ides but no action! Alex.

[Donate] this building to the pursuit of Art, Aid and Abet a local artist near you! Besides the building is too butt ugly for anything else. Adding 10 or 20 twenty artists is the proper feng shui approach to addressing this problem.

Remove building. Leave as open green space. Could add some landscaped aspects—gardens, labyrinths mowed into grass, incorporate perma culture principles.

Regarding what to do with the Moran site: Build low-income housing! Burlington desperately needs more housing, especially low-income housing. Harold Frost

In return for private developer razing the plant and restoring to waterfront green space for public use. Sell Memorial Auditorium to private developer for $1 for conversion to condominiums/loft apartments—sale to include “fast track” approvals for redevelopment. Let’s talk. Rob Cronin, UVM ‘94

Tear it down—period!

Please! Please! Please! Tear down that eyesore! Uses after that—add to waterfront park—possibly a band shelter for outdoor entertainment. A Veterans Memorial Park. Anything that enhances outdoor use without obstructing the precious few “views”. (Like that Main St. Landing) Terrible use for a wonderfully, beautiful area! We only have “once” to get it right! Thanks for asking for our input!

1. Take it down. 2. Memorial Park. 3. Outdoor Concert Area. 4. Public Playground/picnic area.

This process is a great idea. Very grassroots and community-oriented. A few years ago the Fleming Museum was discussing plans to have gallery space along with studio space for UVM at the plant. I still think that is a good idea. Other needs for our community include: 1. affordable studio space for visual and performing artists. 2. a small performance venue ≤ 100 person capacity as a way for artists to perform outside of churches/limited use due to building/content restrictions) and Flynn Space (min, $250 rental fee). 3. More low-income and cooperative housing. 4. What happens to the Sailing Center?! Thanks!

That building/area should be a performing arts center. All that land to the north of the Moran would be perfect for outside shows, fairs, or beautiful park. Think SPAC (Saratoga) or Golden Gate park. Come on guys, get serious about this! Eli Lesser-Goldsmith

The Moran building should be demolished. The space could be used for a park (Botanical Garden?), boat access, playground, mini-golf. We would need a “nice, interesting-looking, New England-style” building with washrooms, a cute, clean restaurant (not fast food), a few interesting shops, boat rental. The Farmers Market could also be moved to the Waterfront, to a building that had to be winterized, to make it a year-round attraction. K. Schumann

Tear it down!

Keep sailing center! Use Moran as a recreational center with facilities for exercise, meetings, small exhibits, offices, rental rooms for weddings and community-based events. Fill land on shoreline and install sheet piled bulkhead to expand Fishing Pier shoreline to Urban Reserve. Build new waterfront and docks and launch facility for sailing center.

City to retain ownership; Moran’s existing space could be configured to support offices for Parks and Rec. and partially supported by office space rented to non-profit organizations. Allocate space for exhibits, restaurant and seasonal shops. Keep community sailing/paddling center in building or build new sailing center nearby.

We need low income housing. We should be able to go boating and sailing.

If the building is demolished provide for sailing and kayaking center.

Multi-use; education, museum planetarium and water related activities, kayaking, sailing, etc.

Use Moran as an education center for Burlington School Dept. and retain Community Sailing Center on property, Include suitable supporting spaces/uses such as a cafeteria/sandwich shop, offices, locker rooms, boat maintenance shop (for sailing center) and boat storage area. Develop infrastructure—same as for YMCA proposal.

We seniors would love to live there and go sailing at the sailing center.

Retain the building’s basement for boat storage, put on roof garden on new roof level. Accessible roof botanical garden.
