Your Ideas and Comments: June 10, 2005

Thank you to all who have submitted ideas for the future of Moran!!

Tear down the Moran plant and add it to the Waterfront Park.

The Moran Plant is not worth saving and is an eyesore in its present condition. It should be demolished. The Community Sailing Center is an asset to the waterfront and should be located at or near its present location. Its use continues to be required as the programs expand as the public demands.

What we need is a decent children’s museum . . . Portsmouth, N.H., has a fun one. It would bring people from all over . . .We could have more community gardens, expanding into the downtown with green not greed. Maybe an atrium leading into another dimension free from hunger, poverty and gluttony . . .

1. Raze Moran. 2. Band shell with all amenities. John Cunavelis

Knock it down! Clear it out! Let it be empty for a time! We can then visualize what it can look like by drawings or in our mind’s eye! After a good look at the empty space it will be good to see it gone. The lake view will be so much more beautiful! And, inspire people to come up with a much more beautiful view!

Future use of Moran Plant-an indoor skate park and shop. And, how about (finally) an I.H.O.P. (Our First International House of Pancakes!)

Tear it down! With my job I have to look at that ugly hulk 375 times a summer. We are sick and tired of seeing such an eyesore at the shore of Burlington. Get rid of it. Then discuss how best to use the space.

Develop it into housing for the poor.

Tear the Moran Plant down and have open land for everyone’s enjoyment.

Gerard Robar opinion/idea: There are many uses for the Moran Plant Building here are a few ideas. 1. Ground floor level: sell Vermont made products and Burlington and Waterfront related apparel and merchandise. 2. Other higher floors: snack bar, family restaurant with glassed in views toward lake and waterfront park, or the top level would be better for that. 3. Strictly Section 8 housing for elderly and handicapped. Ms. Rita Robar opinion/idea: Tear it down.

I still think the best use of the plant is to use it to relocate the Y. After all, school budgets are often voted on, changed, lobbied for and voted on again before they pass. Do your homework-keep everything open and let’s try again with more concrete plans to meet objections that we know about. Add some public gardens and a playground there as well.

I’d like to see the building turned into a space like Baltimore’s Power Plant-a renovated structure on the inner harbor that combines public space, amusements and local history. For that matter, I’d love to see the city develop an innovative ride-sort of a functional roller coaster—from Battery Park down to the waterfront. Maybe it could be integrated into the Moran Plant, run on renewable (wind) power, and connected to other public transportation. What a tourist magnet it could be!

Rip it down. Recycle bricks, steel, concrete. Build a convention hall so big name entertainers could have shows, motel casino. Give it back to the Indians. Rip it down.

Expropriate ___________’s and _____________’s personal wealth and business holdings, and use that capital to fund a free municipal gym and daycare center at the Moran Plant.

Community recreation center/YMCA with shared uses with Lake Champlain Sailing Center. This is the perfect use of this site.

We would like to see that building torn down and a new recreation center for all of the city’s people, young and old. The McGraths.

Tear it down--make a park and save the view! (Next time put the address on the postcard.) If there are other interested developers, everything possible should be done to offer them the same deal the YMCA got, i.e., a 99-year lease for $1, offers to upgrade infrastructure, etc. Make an outdoor auditorium. Replace the Mayor and the rest of the City Council to return proper administration of city real estate assets.

Friends: 1. Make it a demonstration site for the education of developmentally challenged children and adults. “Come see how much fun and health can be found in compassionate creativity”. 2. Build a high façade atop one die of the face to accommodate a massive “map” of Lake Champlain stretching from earth to top complete with its cities (alight at night), mountains, and islands. Bill Cleary.

Create an atmosphere that is welcoming to all. The waterfront is morphing into a place that appeals to the well heeled. Do you think a lot of low-income folks go to ECHO? Not really. Goals- intergenerational, welcoming to all, especially low income and make it affordable. This is not a place for the educated and wealthy only. Think.

Tear the building down! Need we say more! Protect the waterfront from foolish schemes! Once ruined that’s it—gone! Clavelle, Monte, Molly, were out of line thinking they could push their “secret” deal! Get with the program—the vote of the people said it all! Touché!
