Thank you to all who have submitted ideas for the future of Moran!!

 

Thank you for inviting input from the community. How about using the Moran Plant as a site to house Burlington archives—a historical repository? A Germain Street resident.

 

Because the waterfront is rapidly being obliterated by excessive building and development. I feel strongly that the Moran Plant area needs to be a place of serenity for the average family. I suggest the plant be demolished and saving usable bricks, etc., to create a park/picnic area for quiet and open spaces.

 

First--tear it down. It’s a creepy eyesore with no historical value or architectural value. Something like a small sailing center with seasonal shops would be nice. A major problem would be traffic, and parking would also be an issue. As a frequent bike path user, I know it’s already a mess, as far as the car/bike path issue is concerned. The waterfront and bike path are wonderful though. A longtime Burlington resident.

 

Tear it down and grass it over . . .make it a park.

Dismantle the Moran Plant. Put the grounds into a picnic park—tables and lawns. Sell the Plant bricks for $1 each used—gain the money for the park. Ruth M. Gilpin

 

First of all—make it a people center for artistic events . . . i.e., musical, theatrical, dancing, etc., events.  The Flynn calendar is a very creative and stimulating one—but it is out of the reach of many Burlington people financially! This should be corrected if the Moran Building is to be a performance center. There should be ample space for workshops—art, music, dance, theatre—i.e., instruction in those fields at a reasonable price.

 

Turn the Moran Plant Property into an outdoor concert arena like the Esplanade on the Charles River in Boston, Massachusetts. This would be for summer and autumn use. A theatre/auditorium building could be constructed next to [the] outdoor arena for year-round use. This building would also contain classrooms to teach cultural arts.

 

Please tear it down. Let’s have open space, and nice new area, I’m so tired of that old rusty building. Use K-Mart Plaza for new YMCA.

 

1. Demolish the Moran power plant building. 2. Erect a suitable facility to house the Lake Champlain Community Sailing Center. 3. Enlarge the existing park to occupy the remaining area. 4. Call on me if I can help: Philip Doherty.

 

Demolish the Moran Plant and extend waterfront park with a walkway, grass, etc. There is already a lot of new development on the waterfront. Let’s preserve one of the most spectacular stretches of waterfront for Vermonters, tourists and future generations. Thanks for asking for our opinion. We love the waterfront. McKenna.

 

Remove the plant. Make a park-type area with some parking available either for fee or not. Maybe discounted parking for Burlington residents. It may be nice to drive up and along the walls to get closer to the water with green space in between. Maybe something like what is in front of the Water Department now. Further back or north a several level parking area would be nice. Cars are here to stay, bringing tourists and residents closer to the waterfront would help with events that happen down there now and in the future. The parking down by the water is very, very poor.

 

Remove the Moran Power Plant and have a local/national competition for plans on the completion of the “Park”. To this day I have not seen a comprehensive plan for this area and I do not want to wait another twenty years for it to be completed. Thanks, Peter and Marie Lorrain.

 

I think a great way to being revenue to the city would be to turn that eyesore into a hotel casino resort/marina. It would bring people in from all over New England and Canada. There needs to be something that will bring in tax revenue for the city! If not, then remove it and make parkland!

 

City water park, water slides, floating rides, etc.—summer. Winter—ice skating rink. Take the snow from the streets and make a sliding hill and snowboard park . . . Make it fun and profitable at the same time, make it affordable for all but make it self-supporting.  Thank you for this opportunity.

 

City should sell to a private developer/company so we can get tax revenues. City should run the business of city management only. Maybe we could have driver-friendly streets. Families and businesses are moving out and costs are rising. We need greater tax revenues to offset losses.

 

I’d say take the top part of the building off. Leave boathouse for now and make more parking for people who use the bike path that would help out a lot. But make it free parking for Vermonters . .  . who live here that will be giving back to us. Just have it that Vermonters have to show I.D.

 

1. Tear down the building, start with a clean area. 2. Leave it a green space, or 3. Year-round swimming pool and conference center combination intended as a revenue source of the city. No more Housing!

 

How about an outdoor amphitheater that will seat at least 5K people and that looks out west over the lake. Or, perhaps that waterfront space could be used to build a superb Olympic-style hockey and curling facility. One that utilized CNG (compressed natural gas) for the compressors and ice resurfacing equipment. Paquette arena is showing its age.

 

Please take the current building down. Convene a study group, widely composed of various stakeholders. Study group might bring, say, three feasible proposals for the land use. (One flaw in the YMCA proposal was that it was one proposal creating an up or down vote.) Call on me if I can help--I’m a professional facilitator and organizational development consultant.
