Neighborhood Grants

The City of Burlington sets aside some grant money through which residents can apply for funds to improve their neighborhoods. Funded through a set-aside of Community Development Block Grant funds, approximately $40,000 is designated each year toward neighborhood improvement projects. Below is more information on the program.

  Community Development Block Grant
What's the goal of the program? Reduce poverty and/or revitalize low and moderate income neighborhoods
How much money is there? 5% of the City's annual CDBG appropriation, or around $40,000 a year
Where does the money come from? U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development
Who can apply? Neighborhood residents or groups, through their Neighborhood Planning Assembly
Who decides who gets money? Neighborhood Grants Board
What's the average grant amount? $1,000 to $15,000
What are typical projects? Traffic calming, playground equipment, park improvements
What can't you do with this money? Buy food or tools, outreach
When are applications due? Usually beginning of March
