The comprehensive revitalization of North Street will
attract neighborhood-oriented businesses, make the street more inviting
to pedestrians and bicyclists, and decrease the demand for parking. The
initial and critical element of this project is the public investment in
transportation improvements dealing with pedestrian safety, traffic
speed and street aesthetics. |
|
Traffic calming measures will include narrowing the
street, using pedestal mounted signals and bump-outs at intersections and
crosswalks. Bicycle use will be encouraged with additional signs and
education.
Aesthetic improvements include the burying
of overhead utilities, and creating an innovative tree belt with 50 additional
street trees. The new tree installation method will maximize the economic and
environmental benefits of trees.
Improved public transit on North Street will include
better information on bus routes and schedules along with the construction of
new high quality bus shelters.

|
Lighting reconfiguration will
improve lighting levels on the street and sidewalks, address issues of
safety, glare and discoloration, and decrease light pollution. All
aspects of the project were designed using “CPTED” (crime
prevention through environmental design) principals that will improve
public safety in the neighborhood.
|
Historic preservation activities will
interpret and celebrate the neighborhood's rich heritage and unique
architecture as well as North Street's role as an important commercial
corridor in Burlington.
