Building Neighborhoods: Clean Up, Service Days & Celebrations

There are many ways to make your community clean and green. Here are a few ways you can get involved:

Neighborhood Clean-ups

Clean-ups are a great way to spruce up your street and home. With a combined effort residents of a street can make drastic improvements in just one day. Joining together makes the work fun and provides the opportunity for you and your neighbors to get to know each other. In addition, building pride and investing in cleanup work will inspire everyone to keep things clean all year long. For more information on how to plan a neighborhood clean up, click here.

Spring Move Out Project

Spring Move Out Project (SMOP) is a collaboration between the City of Burlington, the University of Vermont, Recycle North and Chittenden Solid Waste District to help people who are moving at the end of May to recycle household items, furniture, clothing, books and food. With a central drop off point on Loomis Street, people are welcome to drop things off and pick things up for their new apartments. At the end of the day, all remaining items are donated to non-profits for resale or appropriately recycled.

Community Service Days: Martin Luther King Day of Service

In honor of his legacy of service, CCAN annually observes the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as “A Day On, Not a Day Off.” Each year National Service members work with community members to plan service projects, build collaborations among local volunteer groups, coordinate logistics, and publicize the day’s events. Fueled primarily by CCAN's AmeriCorps*VISTA volunteers, this event traditionally brings together over 150 community members and provides over 600 hours of service to the Burlington community. Interested in getting involved as a participant or host a service project? Call 865-7170.

Community Service Days: Green Up Day

Green Up Day, a state-wide event, brings community volunteers of all ages together to clean up Burlington’s parks, streets and public lands. Held the first Saturday of May, the event is family friendly and a great way to get involved.  Last year, over 469 volunteers collected over 534 bags of trash and removed over 60 graffiti tags in Burlington alone.  Get involved in the planning or volunteer to be a site leader for this year's event. Call 865-7172 or click here for more information.

Neighborhood Night of Success

Neighborhood Night of Success is an opportunity to learn about and celebrate what makes Burlington a great place to live, work and play. Community leaders are recognized for their hard work in making Burlington a safe and wonderful place to live. Over 100 community members have been honored in past years. Call 865-7172.
