Crime causes people to feel alone and unsafe. It hurts
relationships between family, friends and neighbors.
Property is damaged, trust is broken and everyday life is
disrupted for the victim, the offender and the people around
them. Even people not directly involved in a crime often
feel the impact of fear and negativity.
The Burlington Community Justice Center (CJC) utilizes Restorative Justice practices to reduce the impact of crime and conflict in our community without minimizing its significance or long-term effects. A restorative justice approach focuses on the people and community impacted by crime. It elevates the position of victims and the community in the justice process and allows for direct participation of community members in responding to crime. It rebuilds the trust destroyed by crime and focuses on the wisdom of the people who are impacted the most. Our Story...Community Support for Resolving Disputes: Mediation and conflict intervention for disputes among neighbors, business owners and community members. Brooke Hadwen, 540-2393. Managing Neighborhood Noise: The impact of noise, primarily from parties and 'walk-by' noise is a big issue in Burlington's downtown neighborhoods. Resources on how to hold respectful parties, where to go for help when you have a noisy neighbor and more on Burlington's Party Noise Ordinance. Restorative Justice Panels: The CJC’s Restorative Justice Panels are small groups of community volunteers who meet with offenders and victims of low-level crimes. Offenders of low-level crimes meet with a panel of community volunteers and the victims of their crime to discuss the impact and how to make amends. Offender Re-entry Program: Employment, housing and support for offenders reentering the community from prison. |
