Volunteers at Bike Recycle Vermont

Dan Hock, an AmeriCorps VISTA at Bike Recycle Vermont, helps fix up bikes for low-income Vermonters. The work done at Bike Recycle would not be possible if not for the volunteers who come in and give their time. They help give low-income people a chance at independence by providing them with alternative transportation. Dan and his volunteers at Bike Recycle provide insight on how to fix bikes, as well as providing bicycles at affordable rates.

Burlington National Service Launch & Celebration held on September 17th

The National Service Launch and Celebration was held on Thursday, September 17th from 3:00 to 3:45 pm on the City Hall Steps at the Church Street Marketplace. The program included a keynote by Mayor Bob Kiss, members of Vermont’s Commission on National and Community Service, remarks from AmeriCorps Members, Alums, and supervisors, as well as the “swearing in” of our 70 new Members.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service & Celebration

Thank you to the nearly 400 people who made the Martin Luther King holiday a 'day on not a day off' in Burlington. People of all ages and abilities gathered at Burlington City Hall on Monday, January 19 for a Service Rally and then divided into teams for an  afternoon of service projects. Some of the projects included: collecting canned food for the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf, cleaning cars to be distributed by the Good News Garage, cleaning toys and painting furniture at the VNA family room and constructing benches at Lawrence Barnes Elementary School.

Volunteers returned to City Hall to hear local activist and comedian, Oliver Barkley, followed by a free community dinner. The annual event finished with a performance by UVM's step team 'Urban Flava' and a performance of Dr. Seuss' 'The Sneaches' by youth theater troupe, 'Very Merry Theater.'

The event was organized by CEDO's AmeriCorps*VISTA members with sponsorship from many local businesses.

Burlington, VT Selected as a Learning Community with Every Day Democracy

Burlington was selected as a learning partner in the Communities Creating Racial Equity (CCRE) initiative due to the 2003 Racism Study Circles and for the vision behind this current project. The CCRE initiative works with nine cities nationally and is funded by the Mott and Kellogg Foundations and the National Study Circle Resource Center. While it does not provide funding in year one (grant money is a possibility in the future), it will provide us with extensive technical assistance, evaluation, and profile our work on this initiative throughout the United States.
