Building Burlington's Community - Dealing With Dogs:  Scoop the Poop Campaign

Scoop the Poop campaign, run in partnership with residents and the Burlington Eco Info Project, was created to address the problem of dog poop in the community and its potential impact on the City’s beaches and waterways. A committee worked to design ‘Love the Lake, Scoop the Poop’ signs for parks and green belts (shown on right), and a cartoon that illustrates the health effects of dog poop entering lake Champlain.

The cartoon (below) is used to educate dog owners when they apply for a dog license through the City and are displayed on larger boards at several waterfront parks such as Oakledge, Star Farm, and North Beach. The graphics use humor and an environmental message to encourage positive behavior change.

In addition to public outreach, residents also volunteer to collect water samples during rain storms and bring them to a University lab where scientists analyze levels of bacteria, sediment, phosphorous and other pollutants washing into the lake

Scoop the Poop Sign

Some residents supplement the ‘Love the Lake’ signs by attaching plastic bags to the poll at Pomeroy Park.
