Community Action Priorities for Community Awareness and Education
Burlington Racism Study Circle Program

May 2003


A.  Create a large group that will hold ongoing discussions with monthly themes to diversity. Living Room, Monday 11:30 - 1:30 PM IC

B.  Promote greater awareness of racism and anti-racism activities in our local schools and communities through education. Keep focus on racism and avoid watering-down through "diversity," "multiculturalism," token representation, etc. UVM Fridays 8-10 AM IC

C.  Widen Study circles: 1.Bring in religious organizations. 2. Outreach to all communities and have community representatives. Wheeler Mondays 5:30 - 7:30 PM

D.  Continue Study Groups: The members of the Friday Living Room group will continue to meet once a month on a Friday at the R.U.1.2? Community center. They invite all others to attend. Living Room Fridays 11:30 - 1:30 AM

E.  Create A Year-Long Educational Racism Awareness Campaign--Gather Stories of experiences with racism and race relations (make what is invisible, visible and Identify 'champions' - people who will take responsibility for specific pieces of campaign throughout the year. Scrumptious Tuesdays 7:30-9:30 AM

F.  Public Awareness campaign to End racism BPD Tuesday 7-9 PM

G.  Create a marketing campaign through public/private collaboration to portray racial/cultural diversity in positive terms, saturating the city web sites, kiosks, CCTA buses, recycling bins, etc. with images that promote human sister and brotherhood. CCV Thursdays 11:30 - 1:30 PM

H.  Compile and share through a multi-faceted distribution campaign information about policies, rules, laws, initiatives, activities, and projects pertaining to addressing racism in our community. Information should be distributed via listserves, posters, TV Newspapers, and organizations like the Boys and Girls Club. Storefront, Wednesdays at 8 - 10 AM

I.  Community Wide Anti-Racism training; visions include:

  • People in leadership
  • Address institutional racism
  • Increase awareness of white privilege
  • Racism awareness in elementary schools
  • Monthly speaker or workshop on racism BHS Wednesdays 3:30-5:30 PM

J.  Use Media and local venues to educate about racial issues and white privilege: Document stories of people in communities to share - Stories of ways people are hurt through negative interactions around race. Make these available for circulation (print media and video).  Do a diversity push, like the United way funding push. Hunt Middle School Wednesdays 6-8 PM

K.  Create a large group that will hold ongoing discussions with monthly themes related to diversity. Activities could include speakers, videos, training for retail staff, training for city employees, brainstorming for Fresh Air Fund grants, etc…Smaller action groups could result. There would be different sponsors each month such as businesses (Chittenden Bank, Fletcher Allen) and non-profits (United Way, Champlain Initiative) Food would be donated from local restaurants. The key is to market to people who would not normally attend such events. Living Room Monday 11:30-1:30 PM

L.  Increase white awareness and exposure to racism occurring HERE

  • Do a "Day in the Life" exercise in the community to show people firsthand what it is like to experience racism and prejudice in their daily lives.
  • In our community, show educational films about racism and have discussions following the film in order to educate
  • Provide ways for white people to start individual conversations about racism and prejudice. CJC Sunday 5-7 PM

M.  Organize intercultural play groups for parents of young children, to share information, combat isolation, and promote community connection. UVM Fridays 8-10 AM

N.  Diversity education in local situations: Make sure public library collections are
multicultural (Who is the population being served? Do resources include that group?) Place more bilingual books in libraries. Hunt Middle School Wednesdays 6-8 PM

O.  Community Action Alert System
Keep community aware of documented racial incidents.
Educate on issue of racism
Provide information on community resources for people of color.
UVM Mondays 11-1 PM
