Your Ideas and Comments: July 12, 2005 - Part II

Thank you to all who have submitted ideas for the future of Moran!!

Tear down that eyesore no matter the cost. More recreation space—ball fields, tennis, bocce ball, fishing access, playground. A new amphitheater for music and theatrical events. Shakespeare or musical theatre or children’s theatre by the Lake! Wow-what a draw! Stephen H. and Mary

Tear down the building and build a large outdoor concert shell for outdoor venues and festivals with no parking on site. Shuttle people in by bus from parking garage.

We need a city pool (swimming, wading, sprinkler park, etc.) the Lake is so grossly polluted and kids need a fun community place to swim. I think a fun sprinkler/swimming place, a winter pool w/a slide, maybe a community hall with ping pong, a gymnasium, a toddler room, spaces for [our] kids to be safe in all season, teen spaces, parent spaces, too.

Home for Circus Smirkus academy. City-owned flexible space for meetings, classes, retail (especially year-round farmer’s market), teen center, offices for non-profits, winter recreation hub: rent x-country skis, skates, warming lodge. Creative solutions to parking such as drop off only and 24-hour from nearby existing parking lot or very expensive adjacent parking. Keep waterfront access for all: disables, youth, low-income, elderly, sedentary, active, families, empty nesters.

An alternative energy power plant—wind, solar? Observation deck/restaurant. IMAX theater. New CCV Burlington site. New site for Maritime Museum.

Raze building. Keep open space on waterfront. Keep new buildings east of Lake Street. A park to reflect the high peaks of the Adirondack State Park.

I think the building should be torn down, I’d like a nice beach (small) with sand for kids—also some lawn. Have lifeguard protection and security. Winter—small ice skating area—if Rockefeller Center (NYC) can do it, we can too. The teen boys have a special place for boarding? Mildred Ames

Dear CEDO members, The Moran Plant ought to be for multiple public uses, including tourism. The upper deck is obviously the most desirable area and could be used as a “rooftop café”. Roof-goers might be channeled through a marketplace with vendors, art, Vermont history. A straight-to-the-top elevator may be best avoided. Ground level for sports area public meeting places. B. Smith.

1. Demolish bldg. 2. Two municipal pools—indoor for winter/outdoor-summer. Sailing Ctr. could be part pool area w/fees. 3. Large Greenhouses. Rental space for residents—like community gardens for winter/spring. 4. American Selection Gardens among walking paths and café. Gardens maintained by volunteers.

1. Tear it down! And, please don’t put a plaque to remind us of it, like the grain tower. It’s a waste of our tax money and ridiculous. Ideas: A park with parking. We forget in Burl. that people do have to drive cars. 2. A marina w/ real public access for residents w/discounted slips for Burlington home owners. 3. A place for music, bandstand stage 4. One big parking lot so we can sit and look at the view without 5 BPD cars driving by looking for some sort of trouble. 5. No dog park, I have cats.

Tear it down—leaving a modest structure for the community sailing center, and build a world class playground for children (w/remainder beautifully landscaped public/park space w/fountain, etc. T . Schlossberg, Burlington

Tear down plant. Build moorings for short term stays for visitors. Build a visitors pavilion.

Restore existing structure for use by the community sailing center and other interested organizations. Maintain as much green/open space as possible.

Salvage 1st floor for sailing. #1 green space—park.

Dear Cedo, We think a nice area with picnic tables, apple trees and stone fireplaces would be a nice place by the water’s edge. This is what vacationers would enjoy with their families.

The Moran Plant is an eyesore. It needs to be torn down. In its place, I’d like to see some kind of public recreational space. Not housing. The space should be available for every Burlington resident to access and use (i.e., a nature trail, etc.)

Free noncommercial low budget community space. Like before the Boathouse was “sold” to the restaurant and one could go there in the winter, i.e., indoor public park. But not yuppified, commercialized, etc.

Exercise facility. Circus Smirkus permanent residence facility (portion of plant).

Do not tear the building down. Why send all that brick, steel . . . and city history to the land fill? Especially in a city that likes to think of itself as liveable, eco-friendly, sustainable, etc. Deal with Moran as you did the Bakery (Rose St. Collective) recycle! Ideal Tenant: Lake Champlain Maritime Mus.—it combines a traditional waterfront use (boatbuilding) with education, tourist interest, etc.

Tear it down! Should be park space with complete water access. Children’s playground. Lawn, gardens, walking paths. Benches. Sailing center needs to stay somewhere on waterfront. The Urban Reserve or North 40 should be included in this process! Then, a world class destination park—modeled after Berkeley CA’s Marina Park could be established. Food vendors, musicians, winter skating with warming hut, etc.

Demolish the building! Use space for water related services—keep sailing center and fishing boats, and other water sports activities for hire—Build small water activities center. This would utilize the waterfront for commercial enterprise while keeping it aesthetically pleasing.

This building looks very ugly, it needs to be remove[d]. In order to enjoy this beautiful natural especially on this nice place, this area should be left for children or something should be build there just like edges not a whole building. This view shouldn’t be blocked by any building. Please remove the building and leave it as a garden for kids.

Tear the plant down! Every day, month, year you delay, the costs rise. 450K is a bargain compared to the “oops” payment of the ceramic shop to move out of the Battery St. location. Laura Massell

Tear it down. It’s ugly. Put it a mixed-use building in the style of the boathouse or Moulton’s project. Don’t be afraid of private enterprise in the mix. I have a B &B, and people are always asking “where can we eat on the waterfront”—pitiful few places.

1. State-run casino on 2 floors; parking garage on lower level; controversial perhaps but well-run it would bring $ into state coffers and diverse entertainment to area. 2. Remove plant and expand the sailing center and green space with covered picnic tables and gardens (mini-botanical garden). 3. Year-round “international-theme center” with Italian musicians and eatery in one corner; Bosnian dancers and eatery in another, Parisian music and Eiffel backdrop to small pastry shops; Irish pub and dancers, etc.. Greek Russian. Great move to ask for citizen input!
