Your Ideas and Comments: June and July 2005

Thank you to all who have submitted ideas for the future of Moran!! During the Request for Ideas process, hundreds of idea cards, phone messages, letters and e-mails were submitted. These were scanned, transcribed and posted online in the following archives.

There have been many comments about the appearance of the Moran Plant. If it is demolished most likely the first step would be to remove the steel superstructure on the north side. If it’s decided to keep the buildings, tear down the steel superstructure, anyway. It would remove an eyesore and the attractive nuisance for teenagers climbing and painting graffiti.

Tear down plant. Redevelopment/enhancement of Sailing Center. Development of Lake Champlain historical center with revenue generating visitor center with gift shop in collaboration with university. Development of permanent new home for Lois McLure for revenue generating walking tours similar to Mayflower site in Plymouth, MA. Revolutionary War Memorial. Chris DeMaggio

Community recreation center. World’s biggest indoor climbing wall (run by Petra Cliffs). Indoor playstructure for kids in winter. Bike rentals. Tennis courts (with bubble for winter play). Daycare. Swimming in the lake in summer. Skating on the lake in winter (skate rentals). OR: Art center with galleries, classrooms, lecture space, studios, performance space—painting, sculpture, music, drama, crafts, classes (adult and kid).

It would make a great ballroom! Lake Champlain Maritime museum. Sailing school.

“Park”

Tear the building down. Make the area into a park where all are free to go and enjoy it. Picnic tables, grills and more seating is needed. This area ought to be open for all people not just those with money. Keep this area accessible to all peoples, please. Thank you. Beverly Shaw

We need indoor sports area. The Plant should be taken down.

I don’t particularly care if the Moran Building remains or is torn down but it is extremely important that the surrounding land remain undeveloped at most, a simple park. The waterfront already has too much development and is becoming less and less accessible with time. Thank you for soliciting input.

Use the Moran Plant for something that must be on the lakefront—sailing center, small boat training center (kayak, canoe, etc.), swimming club, encourage year-round use of the lake, winter use: skating, iceboats, kite-skiing, etc., frostbite sailing, ice fishing.

1. Consign Lars Fiske and Clark Russel to install art on walls and exterior/interior of building. 2. Shore up platforms on interior and make one level to year-round roller rink; another area-concession stand . . . Call it Burlington Waterfront Family Fun Park. Host roller derby—pro and semi-pro and start amateur league. Host outdoor, “patio” dances, incl. Square dance, samba, rock . . . Keep sail center too. 4. Get Tom Lawson to paint the place. 5. Also, make Moran a stop for historic boats to anchor. D. Horstmyer

Wayne Senville’s idea of turning the plant to an Energy Center is a great idea. Don’t tear it down. It’s part of Burlington’s historic past and just looking for a new utilization. Elise Tillotson

I think the YMCA using/leasing the building is a wonderful idea. However, I feel that the terms of the use/lease need to be more realistic, i.e., a reasonable rent or sale price similar to what another business might pay in light of property values.

The land must be open for public use. The Community Sailing Center should have water access and a new building. Take the Moran Building down. Build a completely accessible to public recreational facility (e.g., community center, bandstand where audience faces the lake.)

I think this would be an ideal location for an international youth hostel. Not only would the organization buy the building, they would pay for the renovations. The renovations would bring short term jobs and orders of building supplies to the site. A youth hostel would also bring long term tourist dollars into the city. I think it could only enhance Burlington as a destination to many travelers. Thanks for your consideration. Their website: www.iyhf.org. Douglas S. Ransford
